Basics

Probably the most basic thing you can do in Rune Factory is tuck your stylus away; most everything in the game can be controlled with the basic button controls. Occasionally you may need to view another screen in your inventory that requires a tap on the touch screen, but that can be easily done with just your finger. The top screen will always display the world map.
Game ControlsDirectional Pad- Move character
- Navigate through rucksack contents
- Select quantity of purchased items at storesStart button- Open your inventorySelect button- Target square on/offA button- Talk to a person or animal
- Select items in your rucksack
- Confirmation of menu choices

The "rings" that appear when you press Left Shoulder and A, B, or X, allow you to activate items without having to go into your rucksack and move the item into your equipped area. You can spin through the ring of items by pressing left or right on your directional pad.
(All this is for DS)

Rune Points

In the upper left-corner of your screen you'll find your current Hit Points and Rune Meter, which shows how much Rune Points you have. The HP and RP system is similar to the Strength and Fatigue system in the GBA and DS versions of Harvest Moon, but a little different at the same time.
Hit Points are your life, and if they reach 0 then you'll either die (if inside a cave, game over) or you'll just faint (if you're outside a cave). Your Hit Points will increase in value as you level up. If you are hit by a monster inside the caves then you'll loose Hit Points.
On the other hand, Rune Points allow you to swing your weapons, tools, and cast spells. If you're hit by a monster you won't loose any Rune Points. As you're exploring and your actions cause you to use up all of your RP, your HP will be used as RP instead! You will start the game with 100 Rune Points on your Rune Meter and you won't earn any more above that value.

The tools, weapons, and spells you use will vary in how much RP is expended. The watering can uses less than 1 RP per use, while the high level Earthquake spell uses up 16 RP in one cast! On average your weapons will use 2 RP per swing.
Each morning when you awake you'll RP will be at 100, and they'll decrease as you work on your farm and fight in the caves. You can recharge your RP by going back to bed for the day or by growing crops. When your crops mature they'll generate a Rune, which you can walk over to regenerate your Rune Points by 25. Once you harvest a crop from the 3x3 square of crops then the Rune won't appear. You also won't receive a Rune if only half of the crops mature.
Recharging your Rune Points can be done while you're exploring. You can bring food with you, but you'll find that most cooked items won't recharge enough to be very useful. The best RP recharging potions you can make aren't available until you've reached at least level 50 skill in alchemy.

Instead you can make your own Rune Factories from the crops you can grow inside of the caves. In each dungeon you'll find areas where you can plant seasonal crops. It's a good idea to plan ahead and plant your crops about half way through the dungeon. If you're not sure where the half way point is, you can check out the cave maps on the site. Don't forget to water the crops every day!
Once the crops mature and generate the Runes, you can easily use them as a recharging point as your trying to destroy all of the machines in the cave. Just destroy as many machines as you have Rune Points for, pick up the Runes from your mature crops, and then make your way to the end boss with a fully recharged RP bar.
One of the best things about making little Rune Factories from your crops is that the Runes will regenerate every day as long as you don't harvest the crops. A good place to make a set of factories is at the entrance of Toros cave, right next to your own farm. If you plant Fall season crops there and allow them to mature, you can use them to recharge your RP as you're passing back and forth from your farm to other areas in Andonea. You also don't have to water the crops once they've matured and begin to make Runes.

Status Effects

As you are fighting monsters you might be afflicted with status affects. When you are under the influence of an affect you'll see a little icon under your HP and RP bars, in the upper left corner of the screen.
You can always use the Medication spell to cure your ailments, except for when you're suffering from Sealing, You can buy Medication from the Library for 3000 G. If you don't have any Rune Points to use for casting then you'll have to fall back to using potions.

If you don't have the required potion head back to Edward's Clinic in the village. He will cure you of anything you're afflicted with for a fee of 200 G. The clinic is open from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm on most days, but is only open from 9:00 am until noon on the weekend.

Basic Tools

To work on your farm you're going to need the basic set of tools. Most Harvest Moon games give these to you at the beginning, but in Rune Factory you're just borrowing a farm so you'll have to get the tools on your own.
Wateringpot - Your basic can will be given to you by Mist at the beginning of the game.
Axe - Visit Bianca when she's inside her mansion and she'll give you a free axe.
Hammer - Once you've unlocked Carmite Cave from Godwin, you'll have to till at least 50 squares of ground with your Hoe inside the cave. You don't have to grow anything if you don't want to. Once you've marked up the soil, visit Leo the blacksmith and talk to him to receive your basic hammer.
Hoe - Given to you by Mist at the very beginning of the game.
Sickle - Acquiring a sickle is similar to earning your hammer. This time you'll need to till 50 squares of soil on your own farm, then talk to Rosetta when she's inside of Jean's seed shop.
Fishing Rod - Walk to the end of the dock on the beach and Sabrina will appear to give you an old fishing pole. You must reach the end of the wooden boat dock before she'll walk up behind you, and you don't even have to introduce yourself to her beforehand.
Pet Glove - Talk to Tabatha at the mansion to receive the item you'll need to convince monsters to live on your farm. To use the glove just stand next to a beast and repeatedly press the B button until it stops attacking you.

Once you have your set of 6 basic tools (excluding the Pet Glove) you can upgrade them by going to Leo and giving him the required items for smelting, or upgrade your house to open your own blacksmith shop. The ores needed to upgrade are found inside of the caves, while the other treasures needed are dropped by the monsters you fight.
Your other set of tools will be given to you once you have befriended at least one monster to live on your farm.
Brush - Talk to Felicity when she's inside of Neuman's shop to get the brushing tool. Use it every day on your creatures to increase their Friend Points. The more FP, the more HP a monster will have. In the case of Livestock monsters, more FP nets you larger produce.
Shears - After you have at least 1 monster on your farm, talk to Camus when he's inside his shop to receive the Sheers. The tool can only be used on the Mokomoko monsters to collect their wool.
Milker - To receive the tool needed to collect milk from Buffamoo, talk to Jasper at his mansion. He'll give you the Milker for free.
Basket - Neuman will supply you with a little Basket you can use for collecting eggs from Kokehoho monsters. It is also used for retrieving Honey from Hornets and Queen Bee creatures.

Magic Spells

All but one of your magic spells can be purchased at Russell's Library. Once you are inside the Library, head towards the bookcases against the back wall. The 3 bookcases will have spells for sale, but you will need to progress in the story to understand the words written in the spell books. The only spell that is not for sale is Escape. You will receive it for free from Mist the first time you venture into Carmite Cave.
Magic spells use Rune Points. The more powerful the spell, the more points are spent. If you don't have any Rune Points then you can't cast any magic! Any monster that you bring with you into the caves that cast magic also rely on your Rune Point meter. Creatures like Little Mage, Flower, Sky fish, Hitodama, and Fairy, will only be able to physically attack your enemies if you use up all of your RP.
A magic spell will take up space in your rucksack. Unused spell books can be placed in your own house's bookshelf for storage.

Crafting

The crafting skills Forging, Pharmacy, Cooking and Decoration, are increased by using the little workshops you set up inside your house. The higher your skills, the better items you can make. Even if you fail at making a recipe you won't loose your ingredients! You will still earn experience in the skill, so failing isn't really all that bad.
The Kitchen workshop can be purchased from Ivan when he is in town on the weekend. He has the Kitchen in stock on the first weekend of the season. The Kitchen, Refridgerator, Table, and Shelves are available in two sizes, but you can only buy the larger versions if you have upgraded your house.

The other three workshops are added to your house once you have upgraded. Talk to Neuman in town and he'll offer to do a house remodel for 200,000 G and 2000 pieces of lumber! It's not cheap, but in order to get the best gear in the game you'll have to pinch your pennies until you have the necessary funds.
The workshops can't be used to throw various items together and see what results appear. You must have specific recipies before you can manufacture an item. The recipe books can be purchased from Russell, and he'll offer different ones every day of the week.
Crafting with the workshops will use Rune Points!

You don't need a house upgrade in order to cook, but you will need to buy the Kitchen and the accompaning utensils from Ivan.

Leo has a limited supply of weapons and armor available, so anything better will have to be crafted by your own hands.

You can equip two accessories that will help you with element resistances, status affects, and even boost your own stats. Each decoration has different properties.

Instead of waddling back to Edward's clinic for some health care, you can make your own medicine at your house. It costs less money, and you can even develop potions that are better than anything available from Edward.

Many of the crafting recipes require ingredients that can only be found inside treasure chests left by defeated monsters.

To make something you simply have to walk up to one of your workshops and press the A button. The top screen will display the recipe you are working on (which is blank by default), and your rucksack will be on the bottom screen, along with an area where you can place the necessary items for the completed product.
If you press the Left Shoulder button on your DS, you will access all of the recipes you have purchased from Russell. Scrolling up and down the page will let you see an image of the finished product on the top screen, along with the items you need in order to make it. You will also see a percentage of how successful you'll be in making that item. Even if the percentage is low, each attempt at making the item will help to increase your skill level.
The recipes can have a maximum of 6 ingredient. The items needed for the creation come from the monsters you defeat, growing wild inside the cave, or food stuff produced on your own farm.

Cooking

Your beginning house has a flagstone area in the southeast corner for a kitchen to be placed. Since you don't start out with the cooking workshop, you will have to buy it from Ivan when he is in town on the weekend. The Small Kitchen can be purchased for 1000 G on the 1st of the season, and the Knife, Frying Pan, and Mixer can be bought the 19th.
Once you've upgrade your house Ivan will allow you to purchase the remaining kitchen utensils (the Steamer, Pot, and Oven) after you've bought the Large Kitchen. The counter on the left-side of the kitchen is the no-utensil area, and can be used if you own the Small or Large Kitchen.
If you haven't purchased the cooking books from Russell, you can experiment with ingredient combinations and hope the result is not a burnt dish. Since there's no way to know what skill level each dish needs without the cookbooks, you could be cooking up failures using completely valid recipes. This is especially true with the Knife and the Sashimi recipes; without knowing the recipe you can't make the skillfully sliced raw fish dishes.
It's easiest to just buy the cookbooks and have the list of recipes available when you are working with a kitchen utensil. The exact ingredients needed for a complete recipe will be listed in the book (press the left-shoulder button when cooking) and you can not branch off from the documented recipe. For example, it is common in Harvest Moon games to add fruit like Strawberries to the basic Ice Cream recipe to enhance the finished product, but that is not possible in Rune Factory. The Ice Cream recipe can only use an Egg and Milk, and nothing else can be added.

All variations of the same recipe are documented in the cook books. You will see recipes that could be cooked using a Small Egg, the same recipe with a Medium Egg, and so on. Each variation requires the same craft skill and result in the same cooked dish. There isn't any advantage to using a larger size ingredient over a smaller one.
Once you've made your chosen recipe, you can eat it to regain Hit Points/Rune Points, and even gain stat increases and resistance to status effects. To eat your food, hold the item in your hands and press the B Button. You can only be under the influence of one cooked dish at a time and you will see an Apple ( ) underneath your Rune Point bar during that time. Each cooked dish will last a set number of minutes, ranging from 30 up to 4 hours (240 minutes).
Basic cooking ingredients can be purchased from Emmett's tavern.

Weapons and Shields

At the beginning of the game your first weapon will come from Leo at his Blacksmith shop. If you try to venture into Kammait with just your basic tools to protect yourself, you'll reach a quick game over.
As the game progresses, Leo will have more weapons available for sale. Each time you clear a cave his inventory will expand. His stock will also change depending on the season you currently are in. The items he sells are used for when you start crafting your own weapons and shields. You can make them on your own, but often it's more of a burden to collect the items required compared to simply visiting Leo's shop and purchasing what you require.
There are 5 types of weapons you can use:
  • 1 Hand Sword - These are the fastest weapons you can swing. They are good for fighting against anything, and can even be used like a Sickle for cutting grass.
  • 2 Hand Sword - A larger blade means you can hit for more damage, but the swing time is slower than the 1 handed version. These can be used as a Sickle as well, although 2h swords won't cut multiple squares of grass.
  • Polearms - They are faster than a 2h sword, but can only damage enemies directly in front of you.
  • Hammers - Besides your basic hammer tool, you can make special hammers that are high on the damage scale. Hammers take a while to swing but one swing may be all you'll need. Big hammers can be used for mining.
  • Axes - About the equivalent of a hammer but with a blade. The giant Axe weapons can be used to chop sticks, but stumps will still require the powered up strength of your axe tool.
Weapons also have a Charge and a number of Swings you can do before the weapon retracts. If you hold down the B button when you have a weapon equipped, it will "charge" its power until you release the B button. Some charges results in just bigger damage hits, while others shoot beams across your screen. The number of "swings" a weapon has is the maximum number of times you can smash the B button until you can move your character. If you press B once you can move right away after your swing has finished, or you can opt to press B multiple times to swing wildly until you reach the swing limit.
You can also build shields for increasing your defense against attacks. Leo sells three basic versions, which can be converted into more powerful items when combined with other ingredients.

Decoration

Your character can have 2 decoration equipped in his inventory. The decorations adjust your stats to prevent status effects or increase your own stats. You can switch out your decorations at any time.
Some of the items can be purchased from Jean's store, but the better items can only be manufactured with your workshop.
One of the best combinations is the Luck Blade in combination with a Critical Ring or Critical Seven decoration. The Luck Blade already has 40% increase to Critical Attacks, but when you add the Critical Ring (+20%) or Critical Seven (+7%) and you can inflict massive damage against your enemies.
There is no restriction to the types of decorations you can equip. You could equip two of the same decoration if you wanted to.

Pharmacy

To recover your health while dungeon exploring, you can bring potions with you in your rucksack. The medicine can be purchased from Edward's clinic or you can make it yourself with the dispensing counter built into your house upgrade.
Status recovery potions are fairly easy to produce, but you will need to hunt down the seasonal wild grasses necessary to mix them. The HP recovery potions can only be produced if you have Empty Bottles. There are 4 available in the game:
  • Check the dresser to the right of the fireplace inside of Mist's house
  • Down in Jasper's basement, investigate the pile of boxes in the southeast corner
  • Win the Egg Contest on Spring 23
  • Win the Exploration Tournament on Summer 26
The other types of medicine you can make with your Pharmacy counter can permanently increase the stats of your character. You can customize your hero to have a lot of Dex, more Strength, or increase his Intelligence needed for more powerful magic spells.
